Lately I've been thinking about

what it means to be yourself. Sometimes it feels like everyone is so preoccupied with what everyone else thinks about them that instead of being ourselves, we are trying to be what we think others want us to be.

Play with me here. For one day, I wish that everyone was blind. I wish no one knew what you looked like and your personality that was the only thing that mattered. I wish people would be able to come out of their shells of physical insecurity and really focus on the things that matter…like being a well-rounded, confident, and good person.

I think a lot of the vices people fall into come from trying to escape reality and being unhappy with themselves. It’s amazing how much the overload of information from internet/media/advertisements/facebook/celebrities affects the way we live/think about/approach our lives. We feel jealous, dissatisfied, and depressed but when it comes down to it…why are we comparing or wasting our time thinking about the random highlights of other peoples’ lives? Instead, it seems much more practical to focus on achieving our own goals and dreams, and expending that energy to figure out the steps to get there. Don’t get me wrong, I’m super happy for my friends’ accomplishments and I care about their opinions… but you shouldn’t do things because other people will praise you. You should do them because they add something to your own life.

Sometimes it can be hard to zone in and focus on the things that matter. Like finding your own interests and working on ways to engage yourself without worrying about whether it’s “cool” or not. That’s why I think it’s important to surround yourself with people who are open-minded and have self-confidence.

Self confidence is loving yourself whether or not you are “accepted.” Because the people who don’t accept you don’t matter.

It’s not that I don’t like or appreciate my friends, I just crave new people and adventure. I know no one is perfect, including myself, but I’m still sad when people disappoint me. I guess all we can really do is let things go whilst trying to be better ourselves.
